Oh, I so thoroughly enjoyed this one. It's one of those rare sci-fi novels that doesn't have a single human character in it, and every alien character feels ... well, alien.
On the surface this is a story about language, and how the way we talk to the world can affect the way others perceive us. Showing how language is so heavily wrapped up in culture, and how culture in turn affects language, this is a fantastic exploration of how people can work through their differences, but also how easy it is to simply not see or understand something that's right under your nose.
This is definitely one to read if you like your sci-fi different and engaging, and when added to Huang's earlier The Water Outlaws it's certainly made me want to read more of their work.
