Of the books I've read by Clarke, I have found most are tales of wonder, not plot. He spends most of his time describing the awe of something extraterrestrial as we saw in Rendezvous with Rama or "2001: A Space Odyssey" (which I read in high school and in my mid-twenties). The same holds true here for futuristic living. The plot is more detailed than usual, but not enough to fill all the holes. This book was an online book club read. Most people were on the positive side of meh, I was on the negative side. Despite an interesting dystopian future, I quickly became bored with the descriptions of everything. Most others in the club liked them. But I think we all agreed that despite Clarke's usual attention to detail, there were quite a few holes throughout the book.
