Biography

Thorne Smith is an American author known for the series of satirically comedic fantasy novels beginning with the hugely successful Topper (1926) and continuing until his premature 1934 death by heart attack. Prior to this success, Smith had served in the navy and worked as an ad writer (a job which he did well but hated, like the protagonist of his 1931 novel Turnabout), while writing poetry. Several of his novels were filmed, and Topper became a popular TV series during the mid-1950s.
