Biography
Alex Davis is a creative writing tutor, events organiser, author, proofreader and copy-editor based in Derby, UK. His long love affair with literature started back in the early to mid-90's with a host of Fighting Fantasy books, from which he moved on to a host of the classics in SF, fantasy and horror, devouring Asimov, Clarke, Moorcock, King, Herbert and many more as a teenager. This led him to study Creative Writing at the University of Derby, from which he graduated with a 2:1 and even more determination to stay close to writing and literature as a career.
His first opportunity to get involved in literature came first as a volunteer at Derby's Festival of Words and Nottingham's Poetry in the City, and he made such an impression in Nottingham that he was offered a paid role as co-ordinator for Poetry in the City the following year. This pretty much coincided with his being offered the role of Literature Development Officer for Derby City Council, a post which he would go on to hold for three years. In this time he ran two Festivals of Words in the city, as well as establishing the highly successful Alt.Fiction festival, which first ran in 2006 and enjoys its sixth year in 2012. As well as these major events, Alex also ran a host of one-off workshops, readings and seminars within the city, as well as offering tailored one-to-one advice to writers from many different backgrounds and interests.
With three successful years behind him, Alex took the leap into publishing, moving to Games Workshop as Desk Editor for Black Library and Solaris. In this time he worked on a host of New York bestselling titles and
with a number of luminaries from the field of genre fiction, working heavily on the copy-editing and proofreading of titles and writing a number of book blurbs and blog posts for an array of successful publications. Alex also co-edited the Death and Dishonour anthology, which blended a number of established authors with a number of competition winners. He also helped to establish the Black Library Live event, which has now grown into the Black Library Weekender, as well as being involved in the spectacular Games Day event twice.
Alex moved to become a freelancer towards the end of 2010, a role he has occupied for just over eighteen months, and which has taken him in some unexpected directions. Among the many strings to his bow are:
A continued involvement in event organisation around the East Midlands (including the new Discover Festival event)
A teaching career which has to date seen ten sell-out creative writing courses in the region
A proofing and copy-editing portfolio taking in Games Workshop, Orion Books and Little, Brown, as well as a host of roleplaying and games companies
A number of one-off workshops, including a successful slot at Swanwick Summer School in 2011 which led to an invite to be a course leader for 2012
A number of published poems, short stories and articles in a host of magazines and e-zines
