Random quote: "War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent." - George Orwell

Only 5 SF read this month. (I took a break to delve into some detective fiction by Elmore Leonard and Walter Mosley). Of the 5 City of Bohane was undoubtable the best. I also caught up on current winners with Ancillary Sword and Annihilation. So, all in all I haven't moved the needle too much:

June was one of the slowest months I've ever had. I finished 4 books (2 of which I started in May).

New Books of 2014 - 12/12
Reader's Choice Award - 5/5
----------------------------------
12 in 12 - 6/12
Listomania - 6/12
Short Fiction - 2/3
The Unloved - 0/3
Women of Genre - 6/12 - Assassin's Apprentice finished this month
Clear the Shelves - 11/15
New Books of 2015 - 4/9 - Seveneves finished this month
Read the Sequel - 1/3
Sub-Genre Focus - 6/10
Definitive 1950's SF - 3/10 - Player Piano finished this month

And I read one book that didn't fit any list, but does fit with my personal goals of broadening my genre horizons. I read Suffer the Children, a unique take on vampires/zombies that was nominated for the 2014 Stoker.

The Martian Chronicles - Read Again, 50s
Terms of Enlistment - Out There, P&M, Unloved, Series A-Z
The Saturn Game - Short, Clear the Shelves, Solar System, Unloved
Dark Intelligence - Space Opera, 2015, P&M, Unloved, Series A-Z
Moon of Three Rings - Read Again
All Hugo nominated short fiction with the exception of one novella.

I am disappointed in the Hugo short fiction nominees. Most (all) are not award worthy and some are just awful. Two of the novelettes seem like chapters from a larger work. I still have one novella left, but I am not expecting it will be any better than the other four. I don't really like short fiction that much, and after not really liking many of last years nominees, I probably won't bother with the Hugos next year.

June was women-only month for me. I got through a bit more than I expected, to be honest:

The Heir of Night - Helen Lowe

Ancillary Sword - Ann Leckie
- New 2014

- Out There
- Series A-Z (I - Imperial Radch)

The Poison Eaters and Other Stories - Holly Black
- WoGF
- Short Fiction

The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison
- New 2014
- (Winning the Locus F ruled it out of Second Best, and I've already read a Locus F winner)

Time Traders - Andre Norton
- 1950s (1958)
- Series A-Z (T - Time Traders)

The Lascar's Dagger - Glenda Larke
- New 2014

Everything got completely out of control this month. Besides some medical stuff (everything is fine now) and helping my mother-in-law a few weekends, I was delinquent with my challenge spreadsheet and lost track of what books fill which challenges, expanding some of my low level challenges, and adding more challenges that I should be able to finish. At least I know what I've read LOL:

The Gospel of Loki - Joanne M. Harris - Clear the Shelves, Pick and Mix, maybe 2nd Best or 12 in 12 - good, fun, but ultimately unsatisfying.
Tolkien: A Biography - Humphrey Carpenter - Tolkien - really interesting
Nexus - Ramez Naam - 12 in 12, P&M - really good but Prometheus winners frighten me.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Rowling - Read It Again, Sam, P&M, maybe YA - I understand why it won a Hugo with this second read.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Rowling - P&M, maybe YA - I didn't appreciate the angst and anger of the traumatized teen while I was reading it.

I think I'm still on track with everything. The one challenge I have finished (without the possibility of just increasing to the next level) is Read It Again, Sam!
