Synopsis

Human civilizations had spread throughout the galaxies for so many milennia that Earth was no more than a legend, regarded as the mythical planet upon which man had originated. Marnie Maur, and his robot colleague, Bukko, were enroute to the planet, Plune, where Captain Maur planned to settle down. Bukko, programmed to admire and obey Maur, could see no point in this but then, to Bukko, human beings were in many ways inferior to robots.

Bukko rarely made mistakes, but his decision to allow Maur to make a minor flight correction turned out to be unfortunate. In no time at all, they were not only light centruies off course, but lost. In order to find their way back, it would be necessary to locate a planet which contained fissionable materials needed for fuel. They found that they were in the galaxy mentioned in all of the legends concerning the origin fo the human race.

And thus they came to the world called Nardos. It was a habitable planet, gravity and atmosphere adequate, although there was very little water--they saw small, shallow seas, most of them not much larger than lakes on Plune.

Then, as the approached, a signal came on their radio: "Spaceship unidentified. Come in. Spaceship. Nardos patrol ship calling."
