Synopsis

Under the Hill is an unfinished fantastical erotic novel by Aubrey Beardsley, based on the legend of Tannhäuser. The first few chapters of which were published (censored) in The Savoy in 1896.

These censored chapters were later included in a posthumous collection published in 1904 by John Lane, titled Under the Hill and Other Essays in Prose and Verse, including Table Talk.

In 1907, the full uncensored manuscript was privately published by Leonard Smithers, who retitled the work as The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser.

The uncensored version was later completed by John Glassco and published in 1959 by Olympia Press and Grove Press with the extravagant title of Under the Hill; or, The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser: In Which Is Set Forth an Exact Account of the Manner of State Held by Madam Venus, Goddess & Meretrix, Under the Famous Horselberg, and Containing the Adventures of Tannhäuser in that Place, His Journeying to Rome, and Return to the Loving Mountain.
