Farrar, Straus and Giroux, or FSG as it is known in the publishing world, has grown an impressive reputation for literary quality in the last 50 years. Founders Roger W. Straus and John Farrar started publishing in 1946 as "Farrar, Straus" and then brought in veteran editor Robert Giroux 1956 to become "Farrar, Straus and Giroux." Their list of authors is impressive... John Irving, Mario Vargas Llosa and John Steinbeck. Also of note is the fact that FSG has remained an independent press, not succumbing to the inevitable purchase/ imprint lifecycle many presses experience.
