Biography
It won't surprise anyone to learn that Boris Karloff has lead a double life. Born in London in 1887 as Charles Edward Pratt, he came to America in 1909. When he began his stage career in stock and itinerant companies, he assumed the name which has become a haunted-household world. The "Karloff" he borrowed from an ancestor of his mother's, and the "Boris" he chose because it seemed to fit. After a long apprenticeship, his great changce came in 1931 as the monster in the film Frankenstein. His path then lead from on successful horror to another, and most recently to the Broadway stage and Arsenic and Old Lace.
But all this was Boris Karloff and not Charles Edward Pratt. As Mr Pratt he is a tall, lean gentleman--and a scholar. This collection if proof that his reading in the field of mystery and horror has been wide and catholic. Nor is it his first product as an editor; the publishers of this volume have also published another group of stories under his editorship, Tales of Terror, which was hailed by the critics as an outstanding collection.
