Biography
Christina Lord writes:
I am a researcher, writer, and teacher at the crossroads of science fiction and French and Francophone cultural/literary studies.
As a science fiction instructor, my goal is for students to understand the genre in its many manifestations; science fiction is a genre of the human species and change, but it is also the genre that provides different perspectives from marginalized voices. I hope to bring different perspectives to students studying in my science-fiction classroom. They can explore alien worlds, times, and ideas, which suggest that our ways of thinking are not the only ways, and that our cultural values are environmental.
I translate this science-fictional worldview to the foreign-language classroom. As an educator who has taught both in the US and in France, my mission is to prepare students for a multicultural and multilingual world. I have always encouraged my students to continue their studies past their program requirements and study abroad. The skills they acquire from learning a foreign language and living in another country allow them to accept their vulnerability in any new situation and quickly adapt. My aim is for students to be able to examine a variety of perspectives in the global community, distinguish their own cultural patterns and biases, and respond flexibly to multiple worldviews.
My research goals are to 1) demonstrate that science fiction is a critical genre for examining the changes and challenges we face as a society and to 2) demonstrate that French-speaking creators of science fiction were trailblazers in the development of the genre and contribute to the global phenomenon of science fiction.
Understanding different cultures, different languages, and being able to explore the implications of humans living in a globalized society of accelerating technological, social, and environmental change is invaluable.
