Biography
Asphyxia is a Deaf artist, author, puppeteer and ex-circus performer. Over the past decade, she has worked performing trapeze, hula- hoops, and marionette puppetry. Asphyxia spent eighteen months designing and building the theatre show, The Grimstones, which toured nationally and internationally to great acclaim, and has now been turned into this delightful children's book series. Asphyxia is passionate about painting, drawing, art journaling, sculpture, metalwork, sewing and anything else she can make with her hands. She sells her creations and portraits online through her Etsy shop, Fixie's Shelf.
An avid art-journal creator, she loves to share her process and help others benefit from this amazing tool for self-expression, problem-solving, planning, goal-tracking and self-esteem. Deaf since the age of three, Asphyxia learnt to sign when she was eighteen, which changed her life. She is now a Deaf activist, sharing details of Deaf experience. She raises awareness of oppression of Deaf people and what we can do to change this. When she's not writing and making, Asphyxia is kept busy by her urban eco-farm, where she raises the majority of her family's food and lives with her partner and son in a tiny mud-brick cottage she built herself.
