Biography
Tina Connolly is a writer and face painter who lives in the splendidly green and drizzly city of Portland, Oregon. She was born in St. Louis and has lived in Northern California, but mostly where she grew up is the lovely college town of Lawrence, Kansas. She and her husband and son live with their two thousand books in an old house on a hill that came with a dragon mural in the basement and blackberry vines in the attic.
In 2006 she spent six weeks in Seattle at the science fiction writing workshop Clarion West. Since then, her stories and poems have appeared in Strange Horizons, Asimovs, Lightspeed, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Bull Spec, and Daily SF, podcasts including Escape Pod and Podcastle, and anthologies including UNPLUGGED: Web's Best SF 2008. Her debut fantasy novel IRONSKIN (a "lyrical and utterly marvelous debut" -- RT Book Reviews) released from Tor Books in Fall 2012, with a sequel forthcoming in Fall 2013.
When she's not writing, she works as a face painter. Before that she worked for local theatres painting backdrops and olios, but when she moved to Portland she met an itinerant Russan/New Orleans face painter and discovered that face painting was a real thing you could do as a profession. Since then she paints every summer at local festivals, fairs, and corporate events, painting surfing cats, warthogs, robots, B-movie monsters chasing screaming girls, and every other awesomely unusual thing she gets asked for.
She used to do a lot of theatre. Like really a lot. But writing and face painting kind of took up all the theatre time. Luckily she discovered podcasting, so nowadays she narrates stories for Escape Pod and Podcastle (among others), as well as running her own Parsec-winning flash fiction podcast, Toasted Cake. She's working on writing a full-length play for production with Portland's Pulp Stage. And sometimes if you catch her at a convention you might find her holding a room party dedicated to performing 10-min SF plays.
Things she really likes include argyle socks, pale ale, tiger lilies, metaphorically fiery maples, ridiculously sharp cheddar, creeks, spectacles, plums, and pie. Things she really does not like include sugar, driving, and ice cubes.
