Biography
Angélica Gorodischer is an Argentine writer known for her collection of short stories, which belong to a wide variety of genres, including science-fiction, fantasy, crime and stories with a feminist perspective. Born in Buenos Aires, Gorodischer has lived in Rosario, Argentina since she was eight, and this city appears very frequently in her work. In 2007 the city council of Rosario awarded her the title of Illustrious Citizen.
In the English-speaking world Gorodischer might be best known for Kalpa Imperial. Its English version was published in 2003, translated by speculative fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin. A collection of short stories, it details the history of a vast imaginary empire through tales of fantasy, fable, and allegory. Gorodischer has also produced many other works including the collections Opus dos, Bajo las jubeas en flor, and Casta Luna Electronica. Her work is noted for its examination of the differences of power among men and women, and of the psychology of corrupt rulers. She is also author of two novels within the genre of detective fiction.
In 1998 and 2000, Gorodischer organized two extremely successful international conferences of women writers in Rosario, Argentina. Gorodischer's literary awards include the Gilgamesh Prize (Spain), in 1986 and 1991; the Dignity award, granted by the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights for works and activity in women's rights, in 1996; Konex Platinum, in 1994; Silvina Bullrich award, granted by the Argentina Writers' Society to the best novel written by a woman during the three precedent years, in 1998; in 2000, the Esteban Echeverria award, granted by Gente de Letras in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and in 2011, the World Fantasy Special Award for Lifetime Achievement.
