6 books read this month. I've increased the reading levels on several challenges since I still have 6 months and I've added a few more too. Close to finishing a couple but progress still seems slow. Making good progress on diminishing my stack of TBRs though.

I am holding off on saying Ive finished the Second Best Challenge, as I have counted The Three Body Problem as one of the books. It may win something, and I will have to replace it. I also may read 12 books for this challenge, since I have a lot of books on my challenge TBR list that will fit.

May was an excellent reading month. I've just had two weeks off work, and as winter decided to come early and it's been freezing outside, I have spent most of the two weeks indoors in the warmth with a book in my hands.

It never seems very easy for me to check my records when these threads come up, but I think I read:

The Long Tomorrow - Leigh Brackett - 50s, WoGF - Great
The Copper Promise - Jen Williams - WoGF, New 2014 - Fun light adventure
The Death of Grass - John Christopher - 50s - Grimly readable catastrophe
The Magicians - Lev Grossman - 2nd Best (Red Tentacle) - I loved this modern fantasy, but the main character puts a lot of people off
The Midwich Cuckoos - John Wyndham - 50s - Another good one.
The Mammoth Book of Steampunk - Sean Wallace - Short - Variable, some great stories
The Mammoth Book of Nebula Awards SF (aka Nebula Showcase 2011) - Kevin J Anderson - Short - Also a mixed bag

I'm not very sure of my stats, but I'm mostly doing OK except on the two awards challenges (12 in 12, and Second Best). I'm hoping those will look after themselves a bit as the 2014 awards come in.

May was a month of short books and juvenile fiction. I think this is the max number of books I ever completed in a month, although I read most of one book in April and finished it on May first, and I don't think any book was over 350 pages, the shortest being about 110 pages. I'm rereading the Harry Potter books because Goblet of Fire is the last book I need to read to complete my own challenge of reviewing all the Hugos ( I read it first before I was writing reviews), and I'm using it for the Read It Again, Sam challenge, and I figured I'd just reread the whole series.

Books Read this Month
--------------------------------
Authority - Jeff Vandermeer - Pick & Mix
Bow, Snow, Bird - Helen Oyeyemi - Just Have To Read More, Clear The Shelves, Unloved
Far-Out Worlds of AE Van Vogt - AE Van Vogt - P&M, CTS, Unloved
The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison - P&M, and possibly 12 in 12 or 2nd Best, depending on its performance this year, and WoGF if I join it
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - JK Rowling - P&M, YA if I join it
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - ditto - ditto
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - ditto - ditto
Herland - Charlotte Perkins Gilman - P&M, and possibly WoGF if I join it.
Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mendal - P&M, and possibly WoGF if I join it.
Time and Again - Clifford D Simak - Just, CTS, Unloved (replacing The Martian which I didn't think would be qualified per the exlusion from the Hugos, but got nominated for a Campbell)
World of Trouble - Ben H. Winters - P&M

I've been a little hesitant of joining new challenges because I obsess about completing them and don't want to overdo it. I'm trying to be more laid back about my reading picks this year, hence the progress on the Pick and Mix challenge.

Challenge Status
------------------------
12 Awards in 12 Months - 3/3
I Just Have to Read More of That Author - 6/12
LGBT Speculative - 0/3
Second Best - 1/3
The Unloved - 8/12
Clear the Shelves - 7/15
Read It Again, Sam - 5/6
Pick and Mix - 19/40
Solar System - 2/3
Tolkien - 7/12

I feel like a slacker! But I will console myself by remembering I've read some large tomes recently: the Fifth Heart at 600+ pages and Seveneves at close to 900 pages. This month I also read :
The Invisible Library
Manifold Time
The Great Zoo of China (don't bother)
Uprooted

A total of 38 so far for the year-so not quite my hoped for two books a week. But then again there are those tomes....
