Random quote: In the case of romances what I found distressing was not so much that they are read only by women, but that these are the books containing the sentences that most rapidy make me want to vomit. - Nomi Szcsi (The Finno-Ugrian Vampire)

I don't think I'm going to finish my current SF read by tomorrow night so here's the deal:

12 Awards: 5/12
Have to Read More: 3/12
Masterworks: 3/12
WoGF: 2/12
Fantasia: 6/12
In Translation: 2/12
Read the Sequel: 5/12
The 35: 12/35
Book of Ones: 2/12
Trilogies: 3/9
2nd Best: 4/12
Short Fiction 1/12
End of the World 3/12
Guardian List 1/7
Mythopoetic 2/12
Killer B's 1/3

Challenges: 16
Completed: 57
Actual Books: 16

I'm concentrating on the 12 Award winners and the WoGF and using books I've got in my TBR. Once that's done I'll see what I need to acquire to finish them bearing in mind my read 5 buy 1 rule. I've had to drop out of the YA challenge since I don't think I can accommodate that many new authors on top of the WoGF.

I have a suggestion that people who have finished one or more of the challenges start a thread to record the fact.

12 Awards: 1/12
LGBT: 2/12
AoC: 1/12
WoGF: 1/12
Creature Feature: 1/6
EotW: 0/12
Faerie: 2/12
Mythopoeic: 1/12
Second best: 3/12
Read the Sequel: 1/12

I've got a lot of overlap, but I've got to step up my game. I've got 60 or so books to read, averaging out at about 7 books a month, which is about 50% higher than my regular reading pace. I might have to work around and find some books with more overlap.

WoGF 4/12
Sequel 2/12
Masterworks 4/12
Trilogy 1/9
Killer Bs 0/3
Guardian 0/7
Authors 5/12
Elizabeths 1/3
Ones 3/12
Bucket 2/9
Second 5/12
Pick and Mix 5/12
35 9/12

Total 14 /47

Seven books read in March:
2 Nonfiction that don't count for challenges

Maelstron (Sequel, Authors, 35) 4.0
Fire With Fire (Pick and Mix, Ones, Second-Nebula) 3.0
Nexus (Pick and Mix, Ones, Second-Clarke) 3.0
Silently and Very Fast (WoGF, 35) 3.0
The Golem and the Jinni (WoGF, Pick and Mix) 3.0

All but Maelstrom were not on my original list of books for challenges. Nexus and The Golem and the Jinni were on the Recent Additions shelf at the Library, so I just checked them out. I read Nexus before I saw the Clarke Award nominees and it just happened to fit three challenges. I read The Golem and the Jinni because it was on the Nebula Award nominee list. I checked out Fire With Fire because it was on the Nebula Award nominee list. And I read Silently and Very Fast because it was on my Kindle and that's what I took to Jury Duty. (Also read a big chunk of Ash A Secret History while I was there - it's ok - interesting enough to keep reading, but not so much that I'm in a huge hurry to finish it.) This was definitely the month of random reads.

WoGF: 7/12
Book Ones: 7/12
Masterworks: 3/12 (2 SF, 1 MW)
Award winners: 3/12 (Neb, SJ, Campbell)
Runners-up: 2/12 (Locus F, Mytho)
Sequel: 3/12
End of the World: 4/12
Elizabeth Noun: 1/3 (Hand)
Guardian: 2/7
Read More: 1/12

So I guess the Read More of that Author is the only one I am behind schedule for, although I'm focusing on the WoGF and Book Ones.

March books:

Soulless - Gail Carriger
WoGF
Book Ones

Riddle-Master of Hed - Patricia A McKillip
WoGF
Book Ones

A Door Into Ocean - Joan Slonczewski
WoGF
Book Ones
Masterworks (Mistresswork)
12 in 12 (Campbell)

God's War - Kameron Hurley
WoGF
Book Ones
(TBA - I was going to count it as the Nebula runner up, but it now has two more noms, and I have the Nebula covered anyway)

On the Beach - Nevil Shute
End of the World

Finish the month with some cheery extinction of humanity.

I have now read 14 books from a provisional target of 49, so it looks like I might just be able to make it, but I'm going to start one of the longer works next. Also, I had to remove a couple of books I really wanted to read, to optimise it down to 49, and I'm not sure I'm happy with that.

...which I have immediately ruined by starting a new purchase that wasn't on the list. 50 books. Nice round number.

State of the Challenge report - Young Adult Reading Challenge - 1/4 way point

20 participants signed up and there are 16 reviews submitted - up from just 4 in January. As challenge host, I have not added much to the blog but I still hope this challenge will capture some younger readers this summer and increase participation on this web site.

Of those reviews, only two are mine, and I am officially behind schedule. Hooray for summer months and vacations!

Women of Genre Fiction 4/12 (4 reviews)
Grand Masters 3/12 (3 reviews)
Read the Sequel 5/12 (3 reviews)

Currently reading something for WoGF, so it looks like I need to read another Grand Master next to even up the numbers.
Overall, I'm reading on a good pace. I have had a bit of overlap between WoGF and Grand Masters and there will probably be a couple more there. I'm using the Sequel challenge to compel myself to read several books that have been sitting on my shelf forever.

Ok for Updates:

Grand Master: 2/12
I just Have to Read More: 5/12
Young Adult: 4/12
One World To Rule Them All: 1/12
The Counting Shall Be Three: 1/9

Now on the surface this looks kind of paltry, but I have made it a personal goal to have no overlaps on any of my lists, so each number on the list represents a unique novel and review. I actually read 11 novels this month, but only three were for this challenge. At that rate I may not finish the challenges until March of Next year! April is going to be dedicated to reading only challenge books, or at least a majority of challenge books.
