Uber User Posts: 526 Location: UK | I have created a new mini-challenge for the Gemmell Awards: 4 books - a winner and a runner-up from both of the two Gemmell Award categories that were added to the site. The challenge runs for 8 months from Aug 2014 to Mar 2015. Gemmell Award Challenge My main reason for adding a new challenge was because I decided not to allow the new awards for my 12 Awards in 12 Months or Second Best challenges. I have plenty of books that qualify, but they're mostly quite long and I don't know if I could manage them before the end of the year, with all those other challenges to finish, so I've extended it into next year a bit.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 556 Location: Great Lakes, USA | I joined this challenge because I have read nothing on either Gemmell Award list. I read very little horror, but I've at least read a couple books on the horror lists. I can't believe that I haven't read a single book on either the Legend or Morningstar list. I may have trouble picking a Legend winner, since most of those are books 2 or 3 of a series.

Uber User Posts: 526 Location: UK | Yes, that does seem to be a bit of a problem with the Legend award. This year's shortlist was particularly bad, including a book 14 and a book 9. I might attempt to work out how many books you'd really need to read to read the whole set of nominees.

Uber User Posts: 526 Location: UK | I make it 69 total books to read the 31 nominees for the Legend, if you include all preceding books in their respective series. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your prejudices) I have already read quite a few of them. I am counting Blood of Elves as book 2 of the Witcher, though. My understanding is that The Last Wish is book 1 (and the cover image on here does say "Introducing the Witcher", although it is a collection, I believe, and that might not be chronological. And if Blood of Elves is book 2, then The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson is the only Legend winner that does not have any prerequisites.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 556 Location: Great Lakes, USA | Finished! I wasn't sure about The Way of Kings - it is long and it is epic fantasy, something I burned out on long ago. But this book was excellent! This ended up being a fun challenge.
