Yes they are... so long as they are traditionally published authors.  We are not taking self/indie published authors at this time.  We simply have too many authors and books to add and we have to make cuts somewhere.

A few authors that write magical realism:
Karen Russell: Vampires in the Lemon Grove, St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Swamplandia!
Aimee Bender: The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, The Color Master, Willful Creatures, An Invisible Sign of My Own, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
Ramona Ausubel: A Guide to Being Born, No One Is Here Except All of Us

Also, Jeanette Winterson is not in the database. Two of her novels: Sexing the Cherry and The Passion qualify as magical realism (I think). And The Stone Gods is sci-fi.

Could you flag Neil Gaiman's Coraline as Fantasy. It's in the Juvenile Fantasy sub-genre so I think it qualifies. Thanks.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is also not coming up as fantasy.

And a few more requests:
Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja
Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin

Coraline and Neverwhere have been updated.

Our current request list is sitting at 207 books.  That includes a lot of series books that go along with the individual requests since we prefer to put the whole seies in at the same time.  That way we won't have to come back later to fill in the gaps.  So that's after less than 10 days since we launched the RYO.

We're going to be a bit slow getting to all these because we're still working on new features for the challenge etc. but we'll get there.

Wow! Tons of work ahead for you all.

Just wondering if there is a list already in place for authors of color. It would be helpful for the challenge of that name. Thanks!

Determining race for our 1,441 authors is not so easily done and woe to he who gets it wrong for just one author! We decided to go around that minefield and leave it to our members to decide for themselves who is and who isn't an author of color.

We only track author gender because that's a simple either or option and it was essential to make the WoGF work and to help us work on our gender balance.  And THAT was dicey enough for us!  You wouldn't believe some of the negative reactions we had to deal with.  I can only imagine the drek storm that would come from even simple mistakes regarding race and color issues.

Usually either/or. I know of at least one SFF author who identifies as neither male nor female (Raphael Carter, who wrote the Tiptree Award-winning short story "'Congenital Agenesis of Gender Ideation' by K.N. Sirsi and Sandra Botkin"). Which isn't at all to imply that I disagree with tracking author gender on this site! It's great to have the list of women authors as a resource, and even better that WWEnd values and promotes female-authored works. I just thought it important to point out that even as "simple" a matter of identity as gender can get complicated for some people.

And re: authors of color, I know I have a bunch of offsite lists saved in my (sadly disorganized) bookmarks that could help participants in that challenge. I'll try to dig those up soon and post the links in the forums.

Please feel free to put my request to the bottom of the list. I have plenty to read already without worrying about 3 books. I'm sure people understand and appreciate all the work you and your people do to maintain this site, and if they don't than this is their problem! Thanks for the amazing work you do!

Of course you're right that even gender is not always simple!  We have Raphael Carter on the site marked male.  We mark authors M or F based on name, photo evidence and what we find online from their web sites etc. but certainly we could have missed others as well.  We have at least one gender switch on the site:  Poppy Z. Brite is now Billy Martin.  We have Poppy as female because she wrote her books when she was female.  If he(now) wrote a new book we'd probably create a new author record for Billy Martin and mark him male and link the authors to each other in the bio blurbs.

I'm glad you have some lists to share because I'm sure they'll be helpful. Thanks!

Over at the ISFDB.org, when I was looking up mack reynolds (looking backwards from the year 2000) I noticed that it has a sequel: Equality: In the year 2000. They're listed as the Julian West books. Oh my, the tidying of the database is never done.

PS is there a way to put the list of women authors back into alphabetical order? I think those I read last year were moved to the top, but there are a number of others that are out of order, making it hard to find.

Thanks!

I think if you open the ones that look out of order in the list of women authors you will find they are in order by their real names rather than by their published names.
