I would be happy if someone could add Rachel Dunne's Bound Gods series:

In the Shadow of the Gods

Thank you in advance.

I'm happy to do this, I love the series too.

But... note that most of the novellas have also been incorporated into the novels and are not new material:

Diving Into The Wreck
• Diving Into The Wreck
• The Room of Lost Souls

City of Ruins
• Becoming One With The Ghosts

Boneyards
• Stealth

Skirmishes
• Strangers in the Room of Lost Souls
• Encounter on Starbase Kappa

Standalone Novellas
Becalmed – story of Mavis (Mae) Kravchenko on Ukhanda
The Spires of Denon – story of Meklos Verr and Gabrielle Reese
The Application of Hope – story of Tori Sabin after Ivoire disappears

These are all in. You get a bonus since the Coulson book was the second in a set.
Since I don't know sub genre tags well for Fantasy, you'll have to do that part.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if The Application of Hope was a stand- alone novella or not. From the description, it sounds like it follows Becalmed.

Okay, the 9 Diving Universe novellas are now in. Most of them are Asimov's Annual Readers' Poll winners and finalists (for, in my opinion, very good reason).

Hi,

Could you please add the latest 2 Cassie Palmer books under the Karen Chance listing? They are Reap the Wind (ISBN-10: 0451419073) and Ride the Storm (ISBN-10: 110198998X). Ride the Storm is forthcoming in August, but cover and blurb are finalized. Thank you!

Hi! I'm doing the LGBTQ Speculative Fiction reading challenge, but some of the books I've read aren't in your database. Can you add these?

Island of Exiles by Erica Cameron
The One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg (it's a graphic novel - do you include those in your database?)
Dreadnought by April Daniels

Thanks!

Hello.

I'm hoping these two books fit the criteria for inclusion here in your wonderful database:

Universal Harvester by John Darnielle
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

Thanks

Hi Abalone,

Is there a speculative element to either of these books? Amazon has classed the first as "Horror" and "Mystery, Thriller & Suspense" and the second as "Historical > Cultural Heritage" and "Political", and none of the reviews I checked for either of them mention anything speculative.

Regards,
illegible

I have seen Exit West described as Magical Realism. A few quotes from The Guardian review of Exit West says

"Exit West, a novel about migration and mutation, full of wormholes and rips in reality"
"annexed to elements of magical realism and even The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe-style childrens storytelling. A normal door, Saeed and Nadias colleagues start to discuss, could become a special door, and it could happen without warning, to any door at all."
"Characters move through time and space like abrupt jump-cuts or skipping compact discs. "

It was also recommended on Tor as a Genre-Bender.

Universal Harvester is classed as horror. I thought Horror was allowed on here? Tor's review of it definitely says it belongs in the horror genre, as do many other reviews I have read. I don't think it is supernatural horror, but judging by the sub-genre's under horror on this site, all sorts of horror are allowed. From the reviews I have read I would say it could fit in psychological horror, or man-made horror, or possibly weird. Until I have actually read it I wont know exactly which sub-category of horror it fits best.

Amazon isn't generally the best resource for making this sort of determination - they only show a limited number of classifications, and these are driven by marketing considerations.  Goodreads tags, generated by readers who have actually read the book, are often a better indicator.

In the case of Hamid's Exit West, Goodreads' top tag is the generic Fiction, followed by Magical Realism and then Fantasy.  So. it's pretty clear that this qualifies as a genre book.

Similarly, Darnielle's Universal Harvester is tagged first as Fiction, and secondly as Horror, so here again is a book that's pretty clearly genre.

It was my understanding from Admin that we include Horror with a supernatural or fantastical aspect, but not mundane Horror -- but I haven't been able to find the post saying that, so I'll point him at this thread.

I checked with Admin, and this is his response:

Back in the day we allowed horror with a fantastical bent to be included as "dark fantasy" when we didn't include horror.  We've been admitting all horror for some years now so anything that meets the usual requirements is good to go.
