Sturgeon and Nebula Award nominated novelette. It originally appeared in Omni, May 1987 and was reprinted in Lightspeed: People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction! Special Issue, June 2016. The story can also be found in the anthologies The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fifth Annual Collection (1988), edited by Gardner Dozois, Omni Visions One (1993), edited by Ellen Datlow, Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African (2000), edited by Sheree R.
