Synopsis
"The Weigher of Souls" is a beautifully written novl which porceeds in a half-fantastic, half-scientific way to investigate one of the greatest mysteries of human experience. It deals with the attempt of an English physician first to capture and then to isolate the essence--or the soul-- which leave the human body after death.
The narrator fo the story is a French friend whom the doctor has taken into his confidence, and who is the man ultimately called upon to bring to its consummation his tremendously significant experiment. Further, the novel narrates with unusual understanding and sensitiveness the romance of the English doctor with a charming actress, tells of his marriage and his sudden death, and culminates with the ultimate frustration of his scientific coup de grace through a number of unfortunate accidents.
"The Weigher of Souls" is set primarily within the inner confines of St. Barnaby's Hospital where the doctor works. This setting, combined with the rather extraordinary character of the doctor's research, lends an atmosphere of the strange and the eerie to M. Maurois' story, a work which is done with all of the finish and artistry that one would expect from this distinguished author. Here, indeed, is an imaginitive gem.
