Synopsis
"In 1945," said George Bockerson, director of Internal Security, "we had the first primitive atomic bombs. By 1960 we had long-range guided missiles capable of delivering super atomic weapons up to seven thousand miles with pinpoint precision. A world war seemed likely, but before war broke out, the force screen was invented and utilized by both sides. The Near Eastern War of 1967-68 was a limited war of the same type as the Korean War. We have had no wars since.
"Force screens or force shields are invisible semi-circular fields of force which were first erected over individual cities, such as New York, and later used to blanket whole countries. Before long the Asiatic Alliance and the American Alliance both had a huge force screen covering their lands. Planes couldn't fly in: soldiers couldn't sneak through; shells bounced off; and guided missiles were deflected. Even atomic weapons at the edge of the force shield did nothing but shake it slightly. Neutral nations in Europe soon erected force shields of their own.
Bockerson's listeners-Russ Sinclaire, force screen chief; Terry Sinclaire's robot secretary: Dave Talbert, master spy, Harry Lietz, chief of robot production, and Norma Cummings, assistant to Dr. Raybitz -- wondered why Bockerson was rehashing contemporary history. They soon found out, when Bockerson started talking about Dr. Baybite's new discovery-the Equalizer, by means of which a force screen could be easily penetrated. They had seen Dr. Raybitz demonstrate the Equalizer only the previous night-all but Talbert, who had arrived this morning with information from Europe. The Asiatic Alliance had nothing in the way of an Equalizer, but they did have some sort of plan involving robots.
Precisely what, was yet to be discovered.
Then Bockerson threw the bombshell: "While we were watching Raybitz demonstrate his model, the plans for the Equalizer were stolen...."
