History

Boston Review is a political and literary forum--a public space for robust discussion of ideas and culture. Independent and nonprofit, animated by hope and committed to equality, we believe in the power of collective reasoning and imagination to create a more just world.

To that end, we reject the easy dispensation of predictable writing to people with whom we already agree. Instead we put a range of voices and views in dialogue on the web, in print, and at public events-fostering the open and engaged exchange of ideas essential to a flourishing democracy. Convinced that the imagination breaks free from neat political categories, we cultivate a public sphere that models pluralism of thought-by loosening the hold of convention, forswearing glibness and groupthink, putting poetry alongside politics, and subjecting arguments to the constructive scrutiny of a diverse and discerning public.

We invite you to join the conversation. Democracy depends on it.
