History
Realms of Fantasy is a full-sized bimonthly color magazine, dedicated to publishing the best in fantasy fiction, nonfiction, and artwork. First launched with the October 1994 issue, the magazine proved an enormous success and quickly established itself as one of the most important short fiction venues in speculative literature. Over the years, RoF has garnered a number of major awards and nominations, and has developed a reputation for the balance it achieves in publishing prominent authors and artists while also fostering new and emerging talents. Early in 2009, Sovereign Media, the longtime publisher of RoF, unexpectedly ceased publication of the magazine with the April 2009 issue.
Shortly afterward, the magazine was purchased by longtime genre publisher, Warren Lapine, of the newly founded Tir Na Nog Press. One of Lapine’s first acts as publisher was to bring back the magazine’s old editorial crew, including longtime and founding editor, Shawna McCarthy, the magazine’s sole holdover from its first issue. The magazine successfully re-launched with the August 2009 issue, with much of its old look and feel intact.
In October 2010, it was announced once again that Realms of Fantasy would be ceasing publication. The December 2010 issue was made available on the website as a free PDF. About a month later, it was announced that the magazine had once again been sold, this time to Kim & William Gilchrist, co-publishers of Damnation Press. Shortly afterward, it was announced that the same editorial crew had once again been retained. The deal led to the December 2010 issue going to press under the Tir Na Nog Press banner, and with the February 2011 issue Realms of Fantasy began its run under the Damnation Books banner.
The last issue of Realms of Fantasy appeared in October 2011.
