Over the years, I've read a few alternative history books and watched a few alternative history movies, and on the whole, I've enjoyed the genre. However, it does seem that the majority of the genre deals with one of two historical points: the South winning the US Civil War or the Nazis winning WW2. Does anyone have any recommendations for some really good alternative history fiction that has nothing to do with the Civil War or WW2?

I'm currently reading "Pashazade" by Jon Courtney Grimwood in which the US did not enter WW1 and the Ottoman Empire still exists. Very good so far.

Location: SC, USA		For some British history, you might try Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series. I also love John M. Ford's The Dragon Waiting. I've had Years of Rice and Salt on my TBR pile forever. I should read it this summer.

Except for the ending I really liked Years of Rice and Salt and I'm not generally a fan of KSR.

I took a quick look at it this afternoon. It's a lot of books, but my new favorite thing is browsing through the database.

Location: near Skegness, Lincolnshire, UK.		How about 'Pavanne' by Keith Roberts, when the Spanish Armada successfully invaded England and brought the country back to the Roman Catholic church.

'Roma Eterna' by Robert Silverberg, when the western half of the Roman Empire never fell, but the whole grew ever larger and more powerful right up to the present day?

Both are made up of long short stories that build to an overall novel.

There`s also 'A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!' by Harry Harrison, when the British won the(American) War of Independence.

Location: Middle TN, USA		I'm currently reading "The Watchmen" in which masked and super heroes change the outcome of society post World War II, the most shocking and horrifying of which is, not one, not two,but (GASP!, SOB!, SHUTTER!) three Richard Nixon terms as President!
