Synopsis

The novel is set in a near-future British Columbia that is both shockingly changed and disturbingly familiar. Globally, the weather has become extreme and unpredictable, and giant corporations rule. They are the chief beneficiaries of a regime of environmental laws imposed too late to stem the damage, but which can be used to control and impoverish the population.

A young woman, Lia, escapes a Vancouver that has deteriorated into a landscape of gated communities, violent gangs, squalid squats, and sinister welfare agencies, and sets off to the Kootenays, where she was born. There she joins a group of people resisting the environmental and economic deterioration that has devastated their community, and meets Matt, an eccentric neighbour who is building his ghostly "bone house."

Matt's bone house is a monument-of-sorts to Star, Lia's friend from the Vancouver squat, who preceded her to the Kootenays in search of the legendary and mysterious Kind Place. Shortly before Star disappeared, Matt met her, an encounter that would change his life. What happened to Star, and did she ever find the Kind Place? Will the commune be able to withstand a large corporation's efforts to evict them from their land, and will Matt complete his home?

The Bone House is a riveting tale of a world in which people have become the endangered species. The memorable characters and their resolve and hope will live on in the reader's mind long after the end of The Bone House.
