History
Founded in 1925 by Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheim, Viking Press is an imprint of Penguin Books. The "Viking" logo was chosen to represent the new firm's spirit of robust entrepreneurship and curiousity. Classic veteran authors such as D.H. Lawrence and John Steinbeck were featured in Viking's presitigous list of talent. Viking was bought by Penguin Books in 1975, becoming Viking Penguin, and continued to publish titles of the highest quality, collecting Nobel and Pulitzer Awards, and other literary awards. Viking also braved the grounds of controversey, publishing "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie in 1989. Today, Viking remains a vibrant and well- respected press, publishing such SF/F works from authors such as Stephen King and Thomas Pynchon.
